This is a classic British pocket watch from the turn of the 20th century. It has a well-made silver case with double hinged back, with a bright white enamel dial, with roman numerals, thermally blued hands and an English lever movement inside.

Brook & Son traded between 1891 and 1941 and were based at 87, George Street, Edinburgh. They were successors to Marshall & Sons. Alexander James Steel, Brooks father, started working at Marshalls in 1853, Alexander himself working there from 1873.

The case is made by John Williams, of Great Sutton Street, Islington, London. The case is silver and is in good condition. There is light surface scratching consistent with age. There is one dimpled dent on the left hand side.

The case back is in good condition for its age with only light surface scratching. The case back seals tightly. The inside of the caseback is signed with English hallmarking for silver, by London assay office, dating to 1904/05. It has the sponsor mark for John Williams made case, of Great Sutton Street, Islington, London.

There is a Personal engraving to R.W. Purvis, Gilmerton. Gilmerton is a suburb of Edinburgh. The same English hallmarks are repeated on the inner of the case back. The inside back seals tightly.

The dial is the original and is in excellent original condition. The dial is formed of enamel and it has no cracks, fractures or hair line fractures. It is a brilliant bright white tone, with a simple railroad track for the minutes around the exterior. The hour markers are black Roman numerals in great condition. The sub-second dial is inset into the dial. The dial has 10 second graduations, marked with Arabic numerals.

The hands are original and are in excellent condition. They are of spade and whip style and have a beautiful thermally blued finish with no corrosion or bending.

The glass is original, fitting the profile of the watch very well. It has some light surface scratches. It is in good condition.

The movement is a English lever movement from the early 1900s. The movement has thermally blued screws and is signed with the Brook and sons name.

The movement is in good condition for its age cosmetically. The service history is unknown and it has not been serviced by ourselves. It has a daily gain of +122 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 190 and a beat error of 3.1m/s.
