Here we have rare and unusual late 1800s gunmetal pocket watch. It has the skeletonised dial with the skeletonised movement, all hand done at the time. It has the gun metal case, measuring 50mm wide. It is surrounded with the rose gold tone accents holding the front and rear glass. The pin set is a rose gold tone as are the winder and loop. It is an open face design with the snap-on front and rear. The rear also has the exhibition crystal back.
The dial has the outer section with the engraved dot markers for the minutes. The roman numeral hour markers are hand skeletonised, sitting between the outer track and the inner ring. The inner ring has the engine turned finish, with it intercepting with the sub-second dial. This has the clear railroad track with 5 second dashes and 10 second arabic numerals. The sub-second hand is mounted to the centre, with the skeletonised section allowing you to see the seconds wheel below. The hour and minute hand are thermally blued, of spade & whip style. From the rear the bridges are skeletonised with the escapement fully visible. The movement has the screwed chaton to the jewel on the centre wheel.
This is a beautiful design which allows you see the artistry of an antique pocket watch movement, whilst clearly demonstrating the way in which the pocket watch functions. Turn the crown and see the mainspring tighten. Watch the seconds hand and see the wheel turn. Marvel at the balances motion and the escapements stop and release.
The engraving was all carried out by hand at the time, which is a painstaking long process.
