Here we have a 1958 Omega Seamaster with the 34mm stainless steel case. It is the reference 2849-1SC which has the three-piece case with snap on bezel and press fit back with washer inside. This variation has the silver tone dial with the gold tone applied, facetted pencil hour markers. Below 12 is the applied Omega logo in the gold tone with the ‘Omega Automatic’ signing below. Above 6 is the stylised Seamaster text. At 3 o'clock is the date window which is neatly balanced with the larger baton markers on the quarters. The hands are of luminous Dauphine style in the gold tone with the tapered central second hand. To the right-hand side is the original clover crown with Omega logo. The case back has the ‘Waterproof’ text to the bottom and the Seamaster Hippocampus motif to the centre. The inside of the case is marked with the reference 2849-1SC. The movement is the automatic calibre 503 which is shockproof, with 20 jewels. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very accurate time. The watch is presented on a period stainless steel 5 link Omega beads of rice bracelet, which is well sized.

The dial on this example is a clean silver tone. It provides a simple base for the hour markers which standout in the gold tone. They are a beautiful facetted pencil shape with the sharp, angular edges. They are applied to the dial, providing a pleasing texture and depth. The quarters are differentiated with the baton markers and the double marker at 12 o’clock. The date window sits at 3 o'clock and has the facetted window in a gold tone. The date wheel is white with the black arabic numerals. The markers have the inset luminous plots to the base which have aged nicely. The applied gold tone Omega logo sits below 12 with the black ‘Omega Automatic’ signing, whilst above 6 we have the stylised ‘Seamaster’ font, a classic feature within this period. The hands are the classic luminous Dauphine style in the gold tone. The central second hand is a neat design, slightly shorter than the seconds track.

The case is well proportioned measuring 34mm x 34mm. The classic lugs extend the total lug to lug length to 42.25mm which adds to the presence on the wrist.

The case is formed of stainless steel and consists of 3 sections with the snap-on bezel, central piece with lugs and the snap-on case back. The bezel is round with the polished finish, which falls away from the edge of the dial to meet the sides of the case. There is a subtle bevel before it meets the sides which is a neat touch.

The lugs extend from the case and have a real presence. They appear from the front to be added onto the case due to the cut-out line for the bezel. They taper inwards and downwards towards the wrist, with a polished bevel to the sides. On the right-hand side is the original Omega signed crown which is the clover design

The case back has the polished finish with the dished edge and flat face. It is signed to the bottom with the ‘Waterproof’ text. To the centre is the Seamaster hippocampus motif which is well defined. Inside it has the instruction ‘Fit washer in back’ which is a common feature in this period to aid the seal. It is signed with the Omega name and is marked with the reference 2849-1SC.

The movement is the Omega calibre 503 which is an automatic movement. It has a jewel count of 20 and benefits from shockproofing. It is a robust and reliable calibre with the typical rose gold plating from the period. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within -5 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 305 degrees and a 1.0m/s beat error.

The watch is presented on a period Omega beads of rice bracelet, reference 8220 with 11 end links. It is a well sized bracelet which will fit up to an 8” wrist circumference. It has the Omega logo to the clasp and rounds off the watch nicely.

The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
